Astronomers use the word “star” in many ways, including: - Instrument that provides a specific wavelength of light. - An ultraviolet spectrograph used to record the spectrum of a star. - Anything that lights the night sky, such as the Sun, the Moon, and - A subatomic particle. A star is the biggest and brightest object that we can see in the night sky. It's the center of everything in our solar system, yet the closest star to Earth is a dazzling celestial object that's well beyond our capability to see. When it comes to these stars, how far away is too far? Is it possible for us to see stars at the outermost reaches of our solar system? How big is the universe? In our solar system, our closest star is the Sun. It is the center of our solar system, and it is located a little more than 8 light years away from Earth. We can see the Sun. We can't see any stars beyond it. How far away are our closest stars? Our Sun is part of a solar system that has about eight planets and hundreds of moons. Scientists divide the planets into three groups: gas giants, inner planets, and terrestrial planets. The largest planet is Jupiter, and the smallest one is the Earth. The distances between the planets in our solar system are not equal. The most distant planet from our Sun is Neptune, which is about 30 times farther away than the Earth. The nearest planet from our Sun is Mercury, which is about 42 times farther away than the Earth. Our Sun is about 220 million miles from the center of the galaxy. The distance of the Sun from the center of the galaxy is called the parallax, and it can be measured by a telescope. We have seen the Moon. But has anyone ever seen a star beyond our Sun? What is the size of the universe? The visible universe is the part of the universe that we can see from Earth. Scientists have calculated that it has about 93 billion galaxies. These galaxies are separated by enormous distances. They can be billions of light years apart. The nearest galaxy is about 2.5 million light years away. Most of the galaxies are small and very faint, and you can see only one or two of them with a telescope. The Milky Way is the galaxy closest to Earth, and it is a spiral galaxy. It is about 100,000 light years across and is the size of the full Moon. Most of the galaxies are smaller than the Milky
